In recent weeks and months things have fallen quiet on Steam’s
Greenlight service. Owner Valve appears to have stopped approving
successful videogames in batches and now greenlights them more
sporadically. Earlier this week Jon Hibbins and Nick Pittom’s Crystal Rift
became one of the latest virtual reality (VR) compatible titles to be
approved on the service. Now another VR title has made the cut in Windlands from Ilja Kivikangas and Simo Sainio.

Windlands‘ Greenlight success means that it has officially been approved for sale on Valve’s digital PC store when the full experience launches in what’s hoped to be either May or July 2015. The title is a first-person exploration videogame that features full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). Players will tour expansive environments, traversing ruins and more with super-powered jumps and a grappling hook that allows them to swing across gaps.
Players are cast as the last automaton, created to fight against war machines. Each level is punctuated with a boss fight that, should they succeed, will grant players new abilities. Once enough of these abilities have been gained it is possible to confront the final boss. Along with the story, Windlands also invites speedrun playthroughs. A demo for the title can currently be downloaded from its official Greenlight page.
The title is the result of a successful IndieGoGo crowd-funding campaign which saw the developers raise $20,473 USD. VRFocus will continue to follow Windlands‘ progress as it heads towards launch, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
